Quick Navigation
Let Their Personality Lead the Way
As we know, not all toddlers are created equal. When creating an unforgettable toddler room, let them be your muse. Are they goofy, serious, hyper, subdued, snuggly or standoffish?
Do they like Disney movies or do they prefer to watch cartoons on TV? Do they like trucks or teddy bears? No matter what, let their personality lead the way.
Design the Room
Now that you have a better idea of the things you want to include in the room, it's time to design it.
You can even sit down with your toddler and ask them for ideas. When you are creating your design plan, here are some things to consider:
- What color scheme are you going to use?
- Where are you going to put the bed, dresser, television (if you're into that), etc.?
- How will you handle storage?
- How will you decorate the walls?
- Will you decorate the ceiling?
- Will you be adding area rugs or play mats?
Take the time to decide exactly what you want to include in the room and write it all down.
You can even draw up a prototype or, even more fun, have your toddler do it. This will allow you both to better visualize the room and make changes as needed.
Clear the Room
Designing a room is like creating a work of art. This means it's best to start with an empty canvas.
If possible, you will want to get rid of many of the items you used when they were younger.
You will probably transition from a crib to a toddler bed or twin bed. You may also purchase new things such as chairs, carpet and more.
Therefore try to totally empty the room before beginning. This will allow you to clean the room and make sure it's ready for the transformation.
Focus on the Walls and Ceilings
The walls of a toddler's room are the most important part of the canvas.
You can paint them, use wallpaper, hand things on them, add decals and posters or anything else you want.
Before you move anything into the room, you need to be sure that you have already completed anything that will be messy or that might damage furniture or other parts of the room.
Do the Floors
Next, you will want to consider what you want to do with the floors.
Many people prefer to do something different with toddler floors for visual and/or safety reasons. For instance, the following are some top ideas for the floors in a toddler's room:
- Carpet/area rugs: Carpet/area rugs are a popular option for toddler rooms. They are soft and pretty easy to maintain. Also, you can add area rugs to protect certain parts of the carpet or to make it more comfortable in certain areas.
- Cork: Cork is also becoming a popular option for toddler rooms. It is a naturally soft material that is safe for toddlers and also easy to clean. This means you will not have to worry about random spills or other issues.
- Vinyl: Vinyl is a more expensive option for toddler rooms. It is super easy to clean, stain/water resistant and not easily ripped or torn.
- Rubber: Rubber is the material commonly used on playgrounds. It is soft, durable and easy to clean and maintain.
Get to Work
Now that you've addressed all the other areas, it's time to get to work! Finish the room by adding furniture, book corners, toys, dressers, chairs, couches, etc.
Take the time to add the proper lighting, storage compartments/containers, and more. The end result will be a beautiful room that is unique and that your toddler will love!
